The North Berwyn Park District's Before and After School Experience
Jerry Marzullo is a partner at the law firm of Puchalski Goodloe Marzullo, LLP. There, his responsibilities include litigating contract negotiations for public employee unions and unfair labor practices, as well as representing clients in related legal areas. Jerry Marzullo works and lives in the city of Berwyn, Illinois, which offers many programs to its residents, including the North Berwyn Park District’s Before and After School Experience (B.A.S.E.).
The B.A.S.E. program, open to students in Berwyn North School District 98, provides school children with recreational and educational activities both before and after school. The program also offers children a place to do their homework so more time at home can be spent with family.
B.A.S.E. staff members are all trained in CPR, first aid, behavioral management, and customer service. The staff encourages students to participate in a range of activities including arts and crafts, themed games, and outdoor play.
The program’s before-school experience starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 8:15 when children are transported to their respective schools. The before school experience costs $20 for five days. The after-school experience costs $50 for five days and runs from 3 to 6 p.m. on school days. Children enrolled in this program are picked up from school and taken to the Berwyn community center for a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities.

Tips for Making Strong Book Club Selections
For more than five years, Jerry Marzullo of Berwyn, Illinois, has worked as a labor attorney and partner at Puchalski Goodloe Marzullo, LLP, in Berwyn. Beyond his legal activities, Jerry Marzullo is an avid reader. He engages with several reading clubs and also enjoys creative writing.
There have been several popular book club selections in recent years, including Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, The Road by Cormac McCarthy, Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love, and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Individuals familiar with these titles may note that they run the gamut from historical fiction to sci-fi and even memoir. So, what is it exactly that makes for a good book club selection?
Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind is that a book club is designed to facilitate discussion among members. While beach reads may fit the bill, it is best to avoid romances, thrillers, and the like, as they traditionally offer a straightforward narrative with relatively little subtext. That said, clubs should avoid falling into a habit of reading only lengthy, complex literary novels.
Another benefit of joining a book club is reading titles you might not normally come across. Variety is key to a book club’s success. Try a novel, followed by a biography, followed by a short-story collection, and so on.
Lastly, each club must establish a clear selection process. There should be a discussion and perhaps a vote before a book is officially selected. It is also advisable to make use of a shorter selection process, as opposed to making multiple selections or plotting out the entire year ahead of time. Instead, clubs should leave themselves open to new titles that may pop up.

Illinois Fire Fighter Peer Support Helps Firefighters Help Each Other
Since 2012, Jerry Marzullo has worked as a partner in the law firm of Puchalski Goodloe Marzullo, LLP, representing the firm’s public safety clients in various labor and employment matters in Berwyn, Illinois, and surrounding areas. Jerry Marzullo’s work in support of Berwyn’s public safety employees extends outside of the legal sphere and includes his service as the vice president of Illinois Fire Fighter Peer Support (ILFFPS), a network of firefighters and EMS providers who give emotional support and resources to their peers in need.
In addition to a staff of members specially trained to provide spiritual and psychological support, ILFFPS includes a team of more than 50 current and former firefighters and EMS personnel who volunteer their time. Volunteers are specially trained in crisis intervention techniques, effective communication methods, and verbal and nonverbal listening skills.
When necessary, volunteers also coordinate with ILFFPS licensed mental health professionals. Firefighters are encouraged to seek support from ILFFPS volunteers when struggling with issues such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, drug abuse, or alcohol dependency.
